ExperienceI taught English (EFL) in Japan for three years to students of all ages from 3 to 90 years old. In addition to teaching elementary and junior high school English classes, I taught one-on-one privately to several elementary students and had a small adult conversation class. Outside of Japan I have teaching experience in the Czech Republic and India.
I am an assistant editor for the Japanese Association of Language Teachers (JALT) and have published several articles about teaching English in India.
In addition to my Masters in EFL and ESL I have a degree in anthropology. I have conducted multi-country qualitative research that has been presented at the Clinton Global Initiative Summit and am also available to tutor anthropology students.
I enjoy helping EFL/ESL students become more confident in their ability to communicate their ideas in English. I am less focused on grammar and the mechanics of language (unless you REALLY want to practice that) and more focused on your ability to communicate your ideas clearly and thoughtfully. However, I also believe that all language students must practice all four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. I make sure to include all four skills in ever lesson and always give fun take home assignments. :)
HobbiesI have lived in India, Japan and the UK but have traveled to more than 33 countries. I love traveling and getting to know other cultures.
Since returning to Portland I enjoy bike commuting, yoga, gardening, cooking, snowboarding and hiking.
I have also been swimming competitively since high school and swam at college. I swam and coached for a Masters team in Japan. I can help coach adult swimmers to perfect their stroke and build endurance.
