I currently work as a Patent Examiner with the US Patent & Trademark Office. I review patent applications for compliance with all laws and regulations. I also use my background in chemistry to evaluate claimed inventions in the areas of organic and polymer chemistry. This involves comparing new inventions to what’s been done already. I search and review patent literature, scientific journals, past seminars and presentations, theses, corporate research disclosures, etc., and determine whether (1) it’s been done before, or (2) would have been an “obvious” combination of various research endeavors. I have experience overseeing lab work for first and second semester undergraduate organic chemistry, as well as organic chemistry labs geared specifically for nursing and pre-med students. I have experience lecturing in organic chemistry lab courses, as well as in first and second semester organic chemistry undergraduate courses. I have experience doing research work in an organic chemistry lab. I designed and carried out reactions involving small molecules and amino acids in pursuit of a non-reducible analogue of the cystine disulfide bond in various cyclic peptides such as oxytocin. I have given seminars on subjects such as development of synthetic amino acids; synthetic advances in the core molecules of HIV protease inhibitors; and Fischer-Tropsch conversion of coal into cleaner-burning gas and liquid fuels. Prior to going to school for chemistry, I worked as a chef. Turns out that a good cooking background can be immensely helpful in the lab, and a good chemistry background can be immensely helpful in the kitchen.
