I love learning, and I like to help others learn. I have four years of experience instructing at the College of Wooster, where I taught literature and writing courses. In addition to lecturing and classroom work, I also did a lot of individualized instruction with my students. This was necessary to help each student develop their skills in research, arguments, analysis, and other writing skills. I worked with everyone from students who struggle with writing to advanced students working on intricate research or home and story collections. When I work with students, I first identify their learning style and where they have gaps. This allows me to focus on their exact needs and optimal teaching methodology. I want to help my students build a strong command of the general structure writing, but I also want to help them up to think creatively and find their own voice. With literature tutoring, I help students identify patterns, themes, and context, and then I help students understand how to analyze and interpret that information to draw their own conclusions. I believe that interpretation of literature is a skill that can be practice consistently and mastered. When it comes to test preparation, I help students understand what the exams are looking for, and then provide students with strategies matching their optimal learning style to help them get a handle on preparation. When students have a strategy and consider own progress on practice exams, this reduces test anxiety and help students become confident. Outside of academics, I enjoy reading fiction and poetry, watching films, golf, and social justice.
