Reed College - Bachelors, Philosophy
I went to Reed College to earn my bachelor of arts degree in philosophy. I tutored on campus, but I started tutoring as a high school student. When I was in high school, I volunteered as a tutor for middle school students and elementary school students who were struggling to learn in the classroom. This experience showed me how much of a positive effect tutoring can have on students, and I gave me a passion to continue tutoring others. What makes tutoring so effective is that it's an individual experience, and it can be focused on the way each student learns best. There many different approaches that can be attempted with students in a tutoring environment, so I like to determine what works for students based on needs, goals, personality, and learning style. When I tutor students and test preparation for the SAT and other exams, I focus on both test taking skills and material that is covered on the test. While students who focus only on tricks and tips for the exams may increase their scores, the students who truly understand the material and can apply their knowledge to the questions can be successful on the test and at the great college they gain admission to. In my free time, I like to read, listen to music, cook desserts, and shop.
