Education

Most recently, I received my a PhD from Columbia University in Microbiology. I spent a few years studying how bacteria communicate with each other electrochemically, and how it's possible to build computer sensors that allow us to hear what they're saying. As part of the same program, I received two masters - one in the sciences, for completion of a research project proposal and collection of initial data, as well as one in philosophy after the defense of my project proposal in front a committee of scientists. Before entering into graduate school, I received a B.S from University of California, San Diego in Biochemistry/Cell Biology.

Experience

I've tutored for many years, both formally and informally. I got my start in college when helping students put together their entrance essay packets, and then continued with SAT tutoring part time. More informally, I've most often worked with my peers in study groups, and we have mutually prepared ourselves for the material on the exam. In the years since undergrad, I've spend a lot of time as an editor for friends and family, as well as a short stint editing scientific papers for Research Square. These experiences have given me a good sense of a few things - study strategies that folks need to be successful, an ability to pull out the important questions in any given subject, and the desire and ability to break complex concepts down into manageable, bite-sized pieces.

I just completed my doctoral thesis, and am interested in working for myself for the first time in my life (!). I just relocated to the Portland area, and am putting together employment that allows me to focus on the other things in life that are important - building a sustainable community of artists and thinkers, spending a lot of time outdoors, and learning the violin.
