Experience

My experience with tutoring spans a wide array of age groups from elementary to college level adults. I have experience tutoring adult Spanish, basic to 200 level Spanish. I have a great deal of experience with an array of ages and learning styles. I spent approximately two years in the Portland Public Schools system helping to run the SUN program at two different schools (Harvey Scott and Buckman Elementary) teaching writing to children. During my junior year at Portland State I managed to bypass the requirement of needing to be a graduate student and was able to land myself in the position of being a TA. I was allowed to take over the majority of the class and subsequently taught English 360, Genocide in Film and Literature. I also have a background in Education as I have taken a few classes. Working as a tutor in a one on one setting I have found is quite rewarding as well as effective for students.One of the best ways that I am able to empower students is through the mastery of language. I understand communication to be one of the keys to success, not only in school and work but in one's own personal life. My goal as a tutor is to encourage pupils to apply what they have learned with me in a number of "real life" scenarios, as learning is not simple regurgitation, but instead being able to take acquired skills and apply them beyond the classroom. I am very passionate about learning and language, as it constructs much of the world around us. Being able to communicate this makes for a much richer experience over all.

I am involved in the poetry community in Portland. I have featured at St. John's Booksellers and at Salon Skid Row. I am somewhat active in the Portland Slam Poetry community, but have had to take a step back to concentrate on my studies. Typically if I am not in school, I am usually writing, reading, swimming or drawing. I have an interest in cooking and painting...all around creative.
