Education

I am employed as a Rehabilitation Specialist in the field of mental health. I inspire, motivate and teach the residents of our program to be part of their community. Through my 20 year career in the mental health field, I have tutored my clients in gaining basic literacy, reading and writing with them and providing education in a variety of subjects of interest to them. I have a BA in English and 20 hours of graduate work completed. I have done some volunteer tutoring in the community with Eastern European immigrants where my knowledge of Ukrainian language and culture is very valuable. Another valuable volunteer experience I've had is being a SMART reader with children, helping them learn to love literature. My experience also includes music performance. I am a regular performer as a vocalist, pianist and mandolin player, songwriter and perform regularly in Portland. I have inspired other aspiring musicians to follow this path. Another one of my skills and interests is being a Metro Volunteer Naturalist. I received training with Nature University to provide adults and children with basic environmental education about local Pacific Northwests wildlife. I have excellent verbal and oral communication skills, have contributed articles in company newsletters and enjoy helping people express themselves with confidence, both orally and in the written word. I am looking to share my skills and experience with others as a tutor because I enjoy this facet of my career and would like to focus more on it.

Experience

I have been a volunteer SMART reader and an ESL assistant in elementary schools. I also have been a volunteer naturalist with Metro, assisting with field trips to Oxbow Park and Smith and Bybee Lakes. I would very much like to share my knowledge of language, culture, mental health, environmental issues, creative writing and music with children and adults and help inspire their curiosity and learning in these areas. I completed a comprehensive introduction in Environmental Education with Metro. I have graduate work in Creative Arts Therapies, utilizing creative self-expression for good mental health.

What brings more joy in my life is being out in the beautiful Northwest outdoors. I have been a volunteer naturalist with Metro, taking out children on trips in natural areas to study wildlife and appreciate the Earth.
