I have an extensive experience in teaching undergraduate classes. I was have been a graduate assistant for 6 years and also a lecturer for 4 years. I completed six 600 level classes in organic chemistry and I have considerable practical and theoretical experience in organic synthesis. My most recent experience was when I was employed as a research collaborator at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2009.The project that was assigned to me involved the synthesis of chiral motifs of importance to natural product and medicinal drug synthesis. The work required the development of a method that would lead to an enantiospecific synthesis of Lepardifomine A, a bioactive natural product isolated from clavelina lepadiformis. Typically the work involved the preparation of different synthetic derivatives based on the method.While employed as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), I undertook research in the development of novel synthetic methods in organic synthesis by using a modified Nazarov reaction. Research in this area led to the publication of three manuscripts in internationally reputed journals. [Tandem alkylation-Cyclization process via an O,C dianion, Banaag, A. R.; Berger, G. Chem.Soc. 2007, 129, 7256-7257] The method developed during the course of this study had possible applications in the total synthesis of Kopsia alkaloids. A synthetic route to Kopsanone was designed and work towards its synthesis was being explored. In both experiences (UCT and UHM), I was required to master the theoretical and experimental aspects of the projects.
