I believe that oral use of a foreign language is essential to helping a student master that language. Mandarin Chinese is my native language, and I have degrees from Portland State University in Oregon in the subjects of teaching both English and Mandarin Chinese as a second language. My education helps me to understand the problems non-native speakers can have while learning foreign languages. Having taught Chinese for several years, I have discovered that children under the age of six learn tones quickly, and after that age they begin to learn the strokes and characters, which helps them to figure out sentence structure.My students are also encouraged to learn about Chinese culture, including the history and traditions of the people, in order to better understand the characters of the language and what they mean. When tutoring, I focus on conversation, so that students will become familiar with the spoken language. Sometimes, this includes playing games and role-playing life situations, which students find both fun and practical. I also focus on written language, so that students can eventually become fluent in Mandarin Chinese.In addition to helping students learn Mandarin Chinese, I also enjoy reading, music, and animals.
