Experience
I would love to make tutoring a bigger part of my life. Throughout my senior year at Reed, I worked as a mathematics tutor. Most of the students I worked with were studying calculus, but I also worked with analysis and linear algebra students. In this experience, I found a great opportunity to exercise some of the skills I had cultivated over my undergraduate career – talking through ideas with others, looking at the same point from multiple perspectives, and analyzing problems into their components. In general, studying both mathematics and philosophy has instilled in me the qualities of clarity, patience, and organization of thought. Dedicating myself to the study of these two disciplines -- and working as a grader for a philosophy course on environmental ethics -- has given me the skills I need to explain an idea thoroughly and helpfully. I have always loved learning. Recently, my learning has taken the form of presenting on philosophical topics from Aristotle to modern ethics, at my college and at the University of Puget Sound's undergraduate philosophy conference. I am excited to continue my intellectual life by sparking interest and understanding in younger minds. Following are my test scores: GRE (2014): 170 Quantitative / 169 Verbal / 4.5 Writing SAT (2010): 800 Math / 750 Reading / 740 Writing ACT (2010): 35 Composite / 35 Math / 35 English / 34 Reading / 35 Science AP Literature and Composition (2010): 5 AP Microeconomics (2010): 5 AP Language and Composition (2009): 5 AP Chemistry (2009): 5 AP European History (2009): 5 AP Comparative Government (2009): 5 AP Biology (2008): 5 Relevant college courses I have taken include: Honors Precalculus, Honors Calculus I - III, Multivariable Calculus, Real Analysis, Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra, Mathematical Logic, Dynamical Systems & Chaos, Combinatorics, and I wrote my senior thesis on non-Euclidean geometry.
