Education

B.A., New York University (2014) -Graduated with Honors -Double major in Anthropology and French Spent six months as a foreign exchange student at Université Montpellier III in Southern France.

Experience

While in France, I tutored university students in English language. Back in the States, I participated in language exchanges at school. I returned to France in Summer 2013 to volunteer for an archaeological dig and to work on a horse stud farm near Toulouse. In Fall 2013, I interned at a French trade organization promoting wines of the Languedoc-Roussillon region. I scored high on my SATs and APs, but I don't remember my exact grades. What matters is that I can speak and understand French in action. What is the point of learning a foreign language, if not to communicate? Communication brings understanding. When that line between "us" and "them" is blurred, we start to see our basic commonalities as humans. Speaking a foreign language is a gesture of peace. French people love it when you speak to them in French. It's not because they feel superior in any way. It's because by using their preferred language, you are making a visible effort to put them at ease. They feel comfortable with you and open up in ways they often can't in English. I have encountered countless French people in the US and abroad who are surprised to meet an American who can speak French well. This is why I want to tutor. I want to help more Americans get to the point where they can have a conversation with someone who doesn't speak English. I want to facilitate more international friendship. And I promise, your test scores will go up naturally when you enjoy the subject you're learning.

Hobbies

After graduating from NYU last year, I took off to Southeast Asia for five months to backpack and volunteer as an English teacher. Back in Portland, I'm taking a Permaculture class, prepping for a yoga teacher training in Ecuador next January, and applying to Psychology graduate programs. I really blossomed into the person I am today while abroad in France. My subsequent international travels have given me priceless perspectives on life and humanity. My aim in tutoring is to transfer that passion to my students. This is why we are learning! So we can be confident navigators of the world.
