Experience
I have worked with kids aged 9-18 for five years. In addition to teaching, I've worked as a head middle school coach in tennis, in a high school, and at a private tennis club. I played tennis in college. Still enjoying the sport, I also worked at a sports sleepaway camp in Massachusetts for four summers. As "Group Leader" I oversaw sixty 10-year-old boys while twenty college aged counselors reported directly to me. These important experiences, and teaching during my last year of high school, has helped me understand the opportunities, challenges, and emotions of being a teenager and student today.In addition to tennis, which I'm highly qualified to teach, I tutor reading, writing, literature, English, ESL/ELL, psychology, history, philosophy, public speaking, social studies, and I prepare students for standardized tests.There are many pressures and expectations on middle school and high school students. I understand this well. In my experience, I spent two years volunteering with the Peace Corps in Morocco, and also taught high school social studies in Kansas. I'm a voracious reader and love both nonfiction and fiction. Also, I like creative writing and currently live in Portland, Oregon where I am involved in political activism.
