Private tutor in Portland, OR

Education

Willamette University '13 graduate with honors majors in English Literature and Writing, French, and History/Politics (with a focus in African postcolonial theory). I maintained close relationships with my professors throughout college and received specialized training in research, curriculum development, student-directed classroom discussions, and editing. I was the editor of my university newspaper and have trained teams of great writers, editors, interviewers, and marketers.

Experience

I'm especially experienced in English, History/Social Studies, French, Public Speaking/Debate Coaching, and Middle School/Early High School Math. I can help you tackle essay writing/editing, literacy/spelling, French language, and math through Algebra I. I am a young and energetic but experienced teacher in all levels of education. I have taught high school ESL, tutored elementary through college students, and teach high school Speech, Debate, and Public Speaking. I have done professional and private tutoring for a number of years, and have received training in methods of tutoring that favor student inquiry and empowerment, ensuring that students practice the critical thinking skills to arrive at their own conclusions. I am an extremely strategic test taker as well! I am especially strong in literacy in all grades, the humanities (literature/English/history/editing/essays), French, and test-taking strategies of all kinds. I am also very comfortable tutoring math and science. I'm happy to work with young children, youth, and university students or adults!

Hobbies

I am extremely jazzed about students and working in education - it's the best! I love to indulge in humor and silliness while still maintaining extremely high standards and expectations with my students. I will work with students to assess their progress frankly, and together we'll build a plan to strengthen skills and knowledge from whatever the starting point may be. I love music (from classical to hip hop to 80s punk) and coffee, walking my pup, reading books and following politics, riding my bike, thinking about equity and accessibility, and dancing.
