Oregon State University - Bachelors, Liberal Studies , Portland State University - Masters, Master of Fine Arts, Creative Writing

I tell stories and I help others tell their stories. I am usually busy with words, either my own or editing someone else's. If I am not writing, then I am enjoying time with my kids and my Great Dane named Bogart. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies with a writing minor from Oregon State University in 2013. In 2015, I received my MFA in Creative Writing, Fiction from Portland State University. Since then, I have taught and tutored college-level students in writing curriculum, English, and literature. My classroom teaching experience has been mostly fiction instruction. I work with students in all disciplines with applications, personal statements, and essays. I utilize a simple step-by-step approach. First, we find some aspect of the project that you care about and want to invest yourself in. Next, we create an outline. Upon writing your first draft, we discuss how it relates to our original plan. Together, we talk about revision strategies and you edit with those in mind. Finally, you have a meaningful final draft that is formulated around your assignment's criteria. This is how professional essay composition is done, and these steps work well for any level of student.
